Twirl is joining Modal
We’re excited to share that Twirl has been acquired by Modal, and we’ll be joining the Modal team in Stockholm. We’re joining forces with a team we deeply admire, to keep pushing forward on a shared goal: making data work magically easy, and letting developers forget about infrastructure.
The Twirl journey
Three years ago, we set out to solve a frustratingly common problem: data teams spend much more time battling infrastructure and tooling than shipping actual data products. We’ve been there ourselves, and we believe there is a better way: a path where teams can focus on delivering data products instead of writing glue code.
Twirl grew out of that conviction. We built a flexible orchestration framework that let teams define, schedule, and monitor data workflows without thinking about infrastructure. Whether powering internal ops or customer-facing features, our goal was always the same: help developers move faster and spend less time worrying about infrastructure.
Why Modal
Modal set out to solve the same fundamental problem, but from a different angle. Modal is a serverless compute platform that makes it easy for developers to scale compute-intensive workloads like ML inference, fine-tuning, and batch data jobs. Modal’s custom infrastructure stack can spin up thousands of GPUs in seconds, helping teams iterate fast and scale up to large production workloads. We’ve been following Modal for years and have watched them build something that’s both technically rigorous, and with a magical developer experience. Like us, they’ve been focused on removing the friction that slows down data work, not by adding more knobs, but by raising the level of abstraction. It’s rare to find that kind of alignment on both philosophy and product instincts.
What’s next
As part of this transition, we’ll no longer be onboarding new customers to Twirl in its current form. That said, the ideas that shaped Twirl, around developer experience, flexible orchestration, and enabling real-world data products, are very much alive. We’re excited to bring those ideas with us to Modal.
Thank you
To our dear customers, investors, friends and families who believed in and supported us along the way: a big and heartfelt thank you! It’s been a fantastic journey so far, and we’re even more excited about what comes next.
